Stone Outdoor Dining Tables: Built for the Elements

Creating an outdoor dining space is about more than just a table; it’s about building a beautiful, functional area that can withstand the elements. While wood and metal are common choices, a stone dining table offers a level of durability and timeless elegance that is unmatched. At JRL Granite & Marble, we specialize in fabricating and installing custom stone tabletops designed to thrive outdoors.

Exterior-Ready Stone Choices

Not all stone is created equal when it comes to outdoor use. The key is to choose a material that can handle temperature swings, UV exposure, and moisture without damage.

Granite & Porcelain for Weather Resistance

  • Granite: This natural stone is the top choice for outdoor use. Its dense, crystalline structure makes it incredibly resistant to heat, scratches, and UV rays. A properly sealed granite top will not fade in the sun and is highly resistant to staining from rain, leaves, and food.
  • Porcelain: As an engineered material, porcelain is a fantastic modern alternative. It is fired at extremely high temperatures, making it non-porous and completely resistant to UV, heat, and frost. Porcelain can be made to look like stone, wood, or even concrete, giving you a beautiful, low-maintenance option that is built for the outdoors.

Slate & Quartzite Considerations

  • Slate is a durable, low-porosity stone with a unique, rustic look. It is an excellent choice for tabletops and is naturally non-slip.
  • Quartzite is a natural stone that offers the elegant look of marble with the superior durability of granite. It is highly resistant to UV and scratches, making it a great choice for outdoor use.

Avoiding Stones Prone to Etching Outdoors

We generally advise against using stones like marble or limestone for outdoor tabletops. These materials are prone to etching from acidic rain and staining from organic matter, requiring much more maintenance and care to keep them looking pristine.

Frames & Bases for Outdoors

The base of your stone table must be as durable as the top. It needs to be strong enough to support the weight and weather-resistant to avoid rust or rot.

  • Powder-Coated Aluminum/Steel: Metal bases with a high-quality powder-coated finish are a perfect match for stone. They are incredibly strong, lightweight, and rust-resistant, making them ideal for all climates.
  • Teak & Treated Hardwoods: For a natural look, we recommend using a durable wood like teak. Teak is naturally rich in oils, which makes it highly resistant to rot and pests. It will weather to a beautiful silver-gray patina over time.

Sealing, Drainage & Seasonal Care

Proper maintenance ensures your stone table remains a highlight of your patio for years.

Sealer Types & Reapplication Schedule

Upon installation, we apply a professional-grade penetrating sealer to your tabletop. For outdoor use, we recommend a high-performance sealer to provide maximum protection. Depending on sun exposure and use, reapplication may be needed every 1-3 years.

Water Runoff & Avoiding Standing Pools

A good design ensures that water can run off the table’s surface and not pool. We will ensure the surface is level, but we may recommend a slight angle to allow for water runoff.

Winter Covers & Storage Tips

While granite and porcelain are extremely durable, using a waterproof, breathable cover during the winter months is a good practice. This helps to keep the table clean and protects it from excessive moisture and debris.

Design & Sizing

Designing your outdoor table involves more than just the material.

  • Seating Counts: A 60-inch round table seats 4-6 people comfortably, while an 84-inch rectangular table can seat 6-8. We can create custom sizes to fit any space.
  • Umbrella Holes & Shade Planning: If your patio gets a lot of sun, a centered umbrella hole is a great feature. We can precision-cut the hole during fabrication to ensure a perfect fit.

Delivery & Install

Due to the weight of a stone tabletop, professional delivery and installation are highly recommended.

  • Site Access & Slab Handling: We will handle the logistics of getting the stone to your site and safely moving it to its final location.
  • Level Pads & Anti-Tip Hardware: Our team will ensure the base is perfectly level and securely attached to the slab with appropriate hardware to prevent any tipping.

FAQs

Will sun fade the surface?

Granite and porcelain are highly UV-resistant and will not fade from sun exposure. The resins in engineered quartz, however, can discolor with prolonged sun exposure, which is why we do not recommend it for outdoor use.

How to clean after barbecue grease?

For greasy spills, use a gentle, pH-neutral stone cleaner and a microfiber cloth. For stubborn spots, a mild dish soap solution can be effective. Always rinse the surface with clean water and dry it with a clean cloth.
